John joined Burns & Wilcox at the beginning of 2021 as Underwriting Director, where his key responsibilities are to oversee the underwriting performance of the business and to make Burns & Wilcox an attractive proposition for capacity.

Prior to joining John had spent 8 years at Aviva primarily as Chief Underwriting Officer for their newly formed Corporate and Specialty Risk division which grew sustainably to £700m GWP over that period.

John began his career at Sun Alliance in 1984, initially in the UK Regional Property & Packages team before moving to their London Market operations in 1993 after becoming ACII qualified. In London John progressed from Senior Property Underwriter to Property Manager following the merger with Royal in 1996.

In 2001 he helped form the new start up carrier, Mitsui Sumitomo syndicate, where in 2003 he became the Property Class Underwriter, with responsibility for Engineering and Construction, and oversaw the establishment of a £100M GWP account, before moving to Aviva in 2011.
